Sang pour Sang Uni.e.s pour la Dignité

“It’s about accepting yourself as you are. Menstruation is not monstrous. It’s something natural. If we can get girls to talk about their bodies without any hang-ups that will change a lot.” – Sydneya Lafia, Executive Assistant, Ilewa (Sang pour Sang Uni.e.s pour la Dignité social enterprise partner in Benin)

The Sang pour Sang Uni.e.s pour la Dignité project is a powerful global initiative to ensure menstrual health and dignity for all. Sang pour Sang strives to address menstrual discrimination in low- and middle-income countries and champion menstrual health and dignity globally through advocacy, research and support to feminist organisations and social enterprises. The project works in nine countries across Africa (Benin, Cameroon, Côte d’Ivoire, Guinea and Nigeria), Asia (Pakistan and the Philippines) and the Caribbean (the Dominican Republic and Haiti).

The Sang pour Sang consortium comprises Fòs Feminista, Equipop, the Global South Coalition for Dignified Menstruation, and PSI Europe, and is funded by the Agence Française de Développement (AFD).

Supporting local social enterprises

A core element of the Sang pour Sang Uni.e.s pour la Dignité project is its support for local social enterprises. Sang pour Sang works to facilitate and strengthen the capacity of its social enterprise partners to improve access to menstrual products through research, grantmaking, capacity building and peer-to-peer learning. To ensure sustainable access, we promote market-based models in which the end user pays for the product, fostering long-term viability. We focus particularly on improving access to menstrual products that meet the "3P approach":

  • Person-friendly: High quality, safe and aligned with user preferences.
  • Planet-friendly: Environmentally sustainable.
  • Pocket-friendly: Affordable for the user.

Social enterprises are market-driven organisations that prioritise social impact. While they operate with sustainable business models and generate profits, those profits are reinvested to advance their social mission.

Our role as PSI Europe

PSI Europe’s focus in the Sang pour Sang Uni.e.s pour la Dignité project brings a strong blend of market-shaping expertise and technical leadership in menstrual health and dignity. We provide targeted technical support to social enterprises, leveraging our water, sanitation, and hygiene (WASH) expertise and deep experience in menstrual health and market-based approaches to help build sustainable, user-centred solutions. Grounded in a cross-sector, evidence-based approach to sexual and reproductive health and rights (SRHR), our role focuses on strengthening the overall ecosystem – ensuring that menstrual health and dignity are advanced through robust markets, empowered local actors, and integrated systems that improve access, equity, and long-term impact.
